Der US-Technologiekonzern stellte am Donnerstag sein Chromebook Pixel vor, das Elemente von Laptops und Tablet-Computern miteinander verschmilzt. Der Rechner soll mit seinem hochauflösenden Bildschirm vor allem dem MacBook von Apple Konkurrenz machen.
„Die Leute werden dafür das MacBook Air aufgeben”, sagte Google-Manager Sundar Pichai bei der Präsentation.
Das neue Google-Laptop ist zunächst nur in den Vereinigten Staaten und in Großbritannien erhältlich und soll 1299 Dollar (umgerechnet gut 980 Euro) kosten
Das 12,85 Zoll Display besitzt eine Auflösung von 2560 x 1700 Pixeln - und soll laut Pichai das schärfste Bild aller derzeit erhältlichen Laptops liefern.
Das Chromebook Pixel ist den Angaben zufolge mit einem kraftvollen Intel Core I5-Prozessor ausgestattet.
Als Betriebssystem kommt Googles Chrome OS zum Einsatz, das praktisch über eine virtuelle Festplatte im Internet läuft. Die Laptops sind dabei mit dem vor einem Jahr gestarteten Online-Speicherdienst Google Drive verknüpft, mit dem Nutzer Fotos, Videos, Musik und anderen Daten im Netz verwalten und von überall darauf zugreifen können.
Das sogenannte Cloud Computing gilt als Technologie der Zukunft.
Die ersten Computer mit einem Chrome-Betriebssystem waren Mitte 2011 auf den Markt gekommen. Chrome OS lief zunächst auf Laptops der Hersteller Samsung, Acer und Hewlett-Packard. Google setzte dabei vor allem auf günstige Preise, um die Vormachtstellung der Windows-Betriebssysteme zu brechen. Mit dem Chromebook Pixel geht der Konzern nun andere Wege: Die Touchscreen-Laptops sind im oberen Preissegment angesiedelt und werden von Google in Zusammenarbeit mit Elektronikfirmen aus Taiwan selbst produziert.
